What is Download Festival?

Download Festival is an annual rock and metal festival that takes place at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England. It started in 2003 as a successor to the Monsters of Rock festival that ran from 1980 to 1996. Since then, Download has become one of the most prestigious and well-attended festivals in the world, attracting tens of thousands of fans every year. Download has hosted some of the biggest names in rock and metal history, such as AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Slipknot, Linkin Park, KISS, and many more. Download is also known for its diverse lineup, featuring not only heavy metal legends, but also alternative rock, punk, pop rock, industrial, rap metal, and even electronic acts.

Why was Download 2017 special?

Download 2017 was one of the most memorable editions of the festival for several reasons. First of all, it had three fantastic headliners: System of a Down, Biffy Clyro, and Aerosmith. Each of them delivered a stunning performance that left the crowd in awe. Secondly, it had a stellar lineup of other bands and artists that rocked the various stages throughout the weekend. Some of them were Rob Zombie, Prophets of Rage, Slayer, AFI, Of Mice & Men, Alter Bridge, Mastodon, Five Finger Death Punch, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Steel Panther, and many more. Thirdly, it had a great atmosphere and experience for the fans. The weather was sunny and warm (a rare occurrence for Download), the crowd was friendly and energetic (as always), and there were even some romantic proposals (aww). Moreover, the festival had improved its facilities and services after the previous year's deluge that caused some problems. There were better drainage systems, more toilets, showers, water points, food stalls, bars, security staff, medical staff, etc. All in all, Download 2017 was a rock and metal festival to remember.

The Atmosphere and Experience

The weather and the crowd

One of the things that made Download 2017 special was the weather and the crowd. Unlike previous years, when rain and mud were common occurrences, Download 2017 was blessed with sunny and warm weather throughout the weekend. The temperature ranged from 18C to 25C, making it comfortable for both the fans and the bands. The sky was clear and blue, creating a beautiful contrast with the green fields of Donington Park. The crowd was also in high spirits, enjoying the music, the sun, and the company of fellow rockers and metalheads. There were over 80,000 people who attended Download 2017, making it one of the largest editions of the festival ever. The crowd was diverse and inclusive, featuring people of different ages, genders, races, nationalities, backgrounds, and preferences. There were also people with disabilities who were accommodated by the festival's accessibility services. The crowd was friendly and respectful, helping each other out when needed, sharing food and drinks when offered, and making new friends when possible. The crowd was also energetic and enthusiastic, showing their appreciation for every band that played on stage.

The proposals and the memories

Another thing that made Download 2017 special was the proposals and the memories that were made during the weekend. There were at least four romantic proposals that took place at Download 2017, all of them involving rock and metal fans who decided to pop the question to their partners in front of thousands of witnesses. One of them was between a couple who met at Download 2016 and got engaged at Download 2017 during Steel Panther's set. Another one was between a couple who got engaged during Aerosmith's set after being together for seven years. Another one was between a couple who got engaged during Biffy Clyro's set after being together for four years. And another one was between a couple who got engaged during Prophets of Rage's set after being together for two years. All of them received cheers and congratulations from the crowd and the bands who witnessed their special moments. But the proposals were not the only memories that were made at Download 2017. There were also many other memorable moments that happened during the weekend, such as:

  • The surprise appearance of Serj Tankian from System of a Down during Prophets of Rage's set, who sang "Like a Stone" and "Bulls on Parade" with them.

  • The emotional tribute to Chris Cornell by Biffy Clyro, who dedicated "Black Chandelier" to him and asked the crowd to sing along.

  • The hilarious antics of Steel Panther, who made fun of themselves, the crowd, and other bands, and invited some fans on stage to dance and sing with them.

  • The epic finale of Aerosmith's set, when they played "Walk This Way" with Johnny Depp on guitar and invited some members of Extreme, Alter Bridge, and The Darkness on stage to join them.

  • The amazing performance of AFI, who played their first UK show in eight years and impressed the crowd with their energy and charisma.

The facilities and the improvements

The last thing that made Download 2017 special was the facilities and the improvements that were made by the festival organizers. After the previous year's disaster, when heavy rain and mud caused many problems for the fans and the bands, Download 2017 was much better prepared and equipped to deal with any potential issues. The festival had improved its drainage systems, ensuring that the fields would not turn into swamps. The festival had also increased the number of toilets, showers, water points, food stalls, bars, security staff, medical staff, and volunteers, ensuring that the fans would have a comfortable and safe experience.
